Boat Test #1739
By: Tim Banse
Coming soon to a waterway near you, the restyled Princess V50 luxury yacht. Below the waterline, its hull form remains unchanged. Above the waterline, we find a flurry of revisions and upgrades. Aesthetics include new window lines and air intake covers. Living areas have been tweaked for more comfort.
Below deck, U-shaped dinette seating replaces L-shaped furniture. Amidships, the full-beam master stateroom’s starboard sofa can now be swapped with a sideboard. Freshwater capacity benefits from a modest bump for longer, lingering showers. A solid-surface sink replaces the stainless-steel sink.
The elongated canopy shade provides respite from the sun’s piercing rays. Aft, new, separate U-shaped and L-shaped seating with (optional seat infill) allows access to the cockpit from port side transom steps. Full aft, the hot and cold transom shower is newly styled.
Upgraded engines belong to a family of 7.7 L turbocharged I-6s. Standard power, twin Volvo IPS600s, rated 440 hp each, offer a modest increase over the previous 435 hp. Optional are Volvo Penta IPS 650s rated 480 hp. With the base power package, maximum speed clocks from 29 to 31 knots Optional engines, with 80 more hp, go a little faster, from 31 to 33 knots.
Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS) is famous for boosting acceleration up to 15 percent, 20 percent higher top speeds, and up to 30 percent lower fuel consumption. Besides going faster and further on a gallon of gas, it also runs quieter. As a bonus, fuel capacity increases by 225L/69USG/49GF, so you can go even further afield on a tank of gas.
Besides creature comforts, a Princess V50 boasts a goodly number of state-of-the-art technologies. The Optional Garmin On-Deck smart boat system tracks, monitors, and controls onboard systems via a smartphone app.
A Volvo-Garmin system has replaced last season’s Raymarine navigation. Volvo Penta assisted docking transforms white knuckle docking into a pleasurable experience. Wind, current or crowded marina: No problem.
