Boat Test #1590
By Brad Roberts
The all-new Tiara 38LS is really three boats in one – a centre console, a dayboat, and an overnight couples’ cruiser – that is redefining the marketplace.
Beginning up at the bow, the anchor locker is massive and conceals the windlass and self-launching anchor roller very well. The bow seating area is deep and offers easily accessible stainless grab rails. Moving aft down the starboard side, you pass the windshield and under the hardtop over the centre console helm. The helm features thee across seating with flip-up bolsters and moveable foot rests, joystick control (with the Volvo Seven Marine 527’s optional outboards on our test boat) and a beautiful glass cockpit.
The entertainment centre and outdoor galley lies directly behind the three helm chairs, and offers a sink, cooktop, fridge and under-counter storage, clanked by two aft-facing chairs. Down below, via the port side sliding door, you’ll find a stand up head and a double-wide berth for a couple to overnight in a space a little bit larger than a cuddy cabin.
The real story here however is the moveable dinette and swim platform design. The entire aft seating console is on a raised platform that manually rotates in place to face the sun (or not), or face forward while running, or aft while at anchor or in the slip. The u-shaped sofa affords room for four or six adults to sit at the table. Overhead the Mediterranean sunshade extends out from the hardtop to offer additional sun protection if needed. A furniture cover protects the whole area from weather, and two stainless folding doors prevent both little kids and pets from escaping out to the swim platform when nobody is watching.
Down a teak-covered step you’ll find a swim platform with a concealed stainless swim ladder and recessed freshwater shower to port, and two Seven Marine new 527 outboards hung off the transom, that produced a top speed of 52mph and a time to plane of 3.4 seconds.
