Azimut Yachts was founded 49 years ago by a university student Paolo Vitelli in 1969, and after acquiring Benetti in 1985, the celebrated yacht manufacturer now hails from the province of Turin, in Italy.
From their flybridge collection, the 60 Fly has always been a top seller for Azimut, and the second generation of this particular model is a real gem. The exterior styling of Stefano Righini begins on the truly massive flybridge that spans nearly a third of her overall length of sixty feet.
You’ll know everything about this yacht is unique when you sit behind helm station – that is located on the port side. The Optimus Electronic Power Steering system by Seastar Solutions provides a piloting experience akin to driving a luxury sports car. You’ll find a sunpad to starboard, and large u-shaped sofa wrapped around a pedestal table behind the dual helm chairs. Overhead the fiberglass hardtop hides a retractable sunroof. The entire flybridge deck is surrounded by gleaming stainless rails, and a moulded fiberglass staircase on the starboard side leads down to the main deck.
On the main deck, the open aft cockpit is accessed from either side of the massive swim platform. The teak floor wraps around the u-shaped sofa and tabled underneath the massive hardtop supported by twin posts beautifully chromed to match the gunwale-mounted cleats. Entertaining clients or guests out here would surely impress. The Achille Salvagni designed interior begins in the salon which features a u-shaped sofa to port opposite a second sofa on the starboard side for a true living room feel. Up one step from the sunken living room, and forward on the port side is the well-equipped galley with four-burner stovetop that sits flush with the solid surface countertop, a full fridge behind matching cabinetry door, and every other amenity you could wish for. The lower helm station is to starboard with twin captain’s chairs, and the main level is completed with a dinette for four adults behind the helm. The nearly floor to ceiling windows offer unprecedented light and openness into the salon space.
The accommodation deck is accessed via a centreline staircase. Straight forward is the VIP guest cabin, boasting plenty of light thanks to the large in-hull windows on both sides. It features an island queen-size berth and en-suite head complete with a separate shower. The starboard side guest room has twin beds and is positioned opposite the day head to port. Aft, the full beam master stateroom features a port-side island bed, a private spacious ensuite with separate shower, and generous closet and storage space. There’s a lazarette cabin with twin beds for the crew aft.
Forward, the foredeck offers yet another conversation area or a place to escape with a morning coffee or after-dinner cocktail. Here you’ll find a u-shaped sofa facing forward, a removable table, and a unique sunpad with a headrest that flips forward to create a second sofa facing the one-piece windscreen. Overhead a removable fabric sunshade is stretched taught between four posts. This might be my favourite spot on the entire yacht.
The Azimut 60 fly is certified to CE Category B, and with twin Volvo D13 engine should cruise around 26 knots with a maximum speed of 31 knots, and with a 2,800 L fuel tank full of diesel you may just decide to never come back! By Brad Roberts
