Express cruisers continue to be wildly popular as boaters move up (to satisfy their “foot-it-is cravings”) and down (to a more manageable two-person boat). The all-new for 2019 Regal 38 Grande Coupe puts a spin on the traditional express cruiser by replacing the maintenance-heavy canvas with a hard top that has a massive opening sunroof built-in.
Correctly labelled a sport yacht, her single level layout increases the living and entertaining space between the large aft deck and the spacious and bright salon. The aft deck has an l-shaped upholstered sofa to starboard, with the entry from the swim platform being to the port side. The outdoor entertainment centre is at the same level as the indoor galley counters, making for a seamless blend between the two when you lower the large electric window and slide open the cabin doors aside to starboard. The hardtop overhand makes this space all seem like one.
The helm features excellent visibility and Volvo’s glass cockpit instrumentation with dual screens. There’s an l-shaped sofa to port and a second sofa behind the Captain’s Chair.
The forward stateroom is the master and features an island California Queen sized bed with access from both sides and a generous amount of storage underneath. The head is spacious, split between two rooms: one for the head and one for the shower. It allows for two people to change or get ready at the same time. The aft guest stateroom features twin single beds or a full size king bed, a settee, and large side windows that make the cabin space very bright. A sliding door is (not) optional.
Sterndrive power options from Volvo include twin Volvo D4 300hp Diesels with an OxeanX dive and joysticks, up to Twin Volvo 430hp V8s with Catalyst EVC and joysticks. With a large 260 gallon fuel tank, the range on the 38 Grande Coupe will carry you to the end of your dreams. By Brad Roberts
