A Versatile 21-Foot Sport Boat

The first thing I noticed about the SPX 21 OB’s design was the windscreen. Sea Ray has swapped the modern 3-piece wrap-around glass for a more traditional 5-piece configuration. The windscreen is complemented by the interior design, which uses similarly sharp angles and straight lines. Overall, the SPX 21 OB is modern and sleek on the outside, with just a touch of classic design inside, giving the overall image of the boat a unique feel.
There are plenty of seats for the SPX 21 OB’s 12-passenger rating. Starting in the bow, there’s a pair of forward facing loungers. Moving behind the windscreen, there is a single captain’s chair to starboard, with an avail-able flip-up bolster. To port is a configurable seating space that can be used as a lounge, or back-to-back companion seats. Aft of this seat is the transom walkthrough and the rest of the aft seating area is a large L-shape settee.

Behind the cockpit is a large sunpad and a full-width molded swim platform, which is quite spacious for a 21-foot boat. The swim platform also has an integrated, telescoping swim ladder on the port side. The center of the swim platform has a recessed motor well. While it does cut down on the available deck space on the platform, it won’t interfere with side-to-side movement.
The SPX 21 OB comes standard with a 150 horsepower Mercury four-stroke. For added performance, buyers can opt to upgrade to a 200 horsepower Verado XL. The added power would be a smart choice if you’re planning on heavy watersports usage or running with a full complement of 12 passengers on a regular basis. The engines are mounted to the transom using Sea Ray’s robotic equipment, which ensure exact engine placement within 4/1000ths of an inch for ideal performance.
Also standard with the SPX 21 OB is a dual-axle painted trailer. The trailer is equipped with disc brakes and a swing-away tongue. There are several upgrades available for the trailer, including a galvanized finish, dual disc brakes and even a premium trailer package for added convenience.
There are four options packages avail-able for the SPX 21 OB. The Captain’s Package offers the flip-up bolster I mentioned earlier, along with a battery on/off switch and depth finder. The All Sport Package turns the SPX 21 OB into a capable fishing boat with a trolling motor, two casting chairs, a live well and a built-in battery charger.
For watersports enthusiasts, the Elevation Package gets you a premium ski mirror, a folding watersports tower with integrated bimini top and wakeboard racks. The Select Package offers a premium dash, LED lighting, stainless steel latches, grab handles and drink holders and also includes upgraded upholstery.
The SPX 21 OB offers several more individual upgrades to match your style. A Raymarine A67 chartplotter/fishfinder is avail-able. The sound system can be upgraded as well with an optional premium package including an amplifier, subwoofer, transom remote and 2 additional speakers.
Overall, the Sea Ray SPX 21 OB is a well-equipped and versatile runabout with plen-ty of features for even the most discerning buyer. Personally, I like the angular interior design and classic windscreen. I would opt for the upgraded power and galvanized trailer. But even in standard fittings, it’s a full-fea-tured boat that will provide plenty of memo-rable moments on the water for you and your family.
