Volvo Penta will allow visitors of the Palm Beach Boat show to test out their Assisted Docking system via Virtual Reality simulation
By Eric Vienneau
Volvo Penta will be offering 2021 Palm Beach Boat Show visitors the chance to “test drive” the new Assisted Docking systems using a virtual reality (VR) simulator.
The Assisted Docking system is designed to address a challenging aspect of boating- docking. This is an industry first. Volvo created a “human-machine interface” using a GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System and proprietary Inboard Performance System (IPS).
With all this, the driver can dock their boat while the system has their back when it comes to sudden changes such as wind and waves.
Overall, the system does not dock for you, but it creates small changes in engine RPM and steering to simply assist the driver, so you are still in control when making important decisions while docking.
“From docking to undocking, we want to provide customers with an easy boating experience,” said Martin Bjuve, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “Assisted Docking is the latest in a long line of industry firsts from Volvo Penta and one that will for sure reduce the pulse of any captain, experienced or non-experienced.”

The Assisted Docking system is an easy-to-use joystick. During the VR Simulation, visitors will dock a 62’ yacht with the Volvo Penta Joystick alone. Then, they will dock the same boat again using the Assisted Docking system and note the difference.
The Assisted Docking platform will be available in spring 2021 and s available to upgrade Volvo Penta IPS-equipped boats up to 120 feet.
Volvo Penta will have two exhibit locations at the Palm Beach Boat show. The VR simulator will be located at booth #1005, and the second location is a trailer booth #1016.
