Yanmar Press Release

It has been nearly a year since Kewatec Shipyards of Finland delivered the Serecraft S14 to Svalbard. The 14-meter work and research boat is powered by YANMAR and used for research at the world’s northernmost university, the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). YANMAR collaborated with Martec AS, a trusted dealer from Norway and a part of the Kewatec Group, to supply the engines. Martec AS played an integral role in the entire project.

The boat is named after the scientist Hanna Resvoll, who was the first female Arctic scientist in Svalbard, back in 1907. Hanna Resvoll was also a pioneer in environmental protection and was Norway’s first environmentalist.

Out on the sea all day, the boat’s unique design makes it easier for students to stay dry and warm as they carry out their research. Data collection can be done more safely and securely with the Hanna Resvoll able to accommodate 12 passengers and a crew of three. The boat is used to map the seabed, collect water samples, inspect research buoys and carry out transport duties. Able to sail 250 nautical miles without refuelling, it has a larger operating area than the Polar Circle boats that also ply the waters of the arctic.

Martec AS, Teil der Kewatec-Gruppe, has been a Yanmar commercial marine dealer since 2016. They perform maintenance and service on Norwegian vessels and deliver genuine spare parts.

For Hanna Resvoll, the reliable team of Martec AS delivered an almost complete propulsion package consisting of engines, gearboxes, the maneuvering system and dynamic positioning system. In addition, other equipment such as the navigation system, generator, and thrusters, were also supplied. Martec AS is a specialist in integrating complete propulsion systems with maneuvering and DP-systems.

“This is the second boat Martec has delivered to Svalbard. In 2019 we delivered a patrol boat to the Governor of Svalbard and now this latest delivery.” says Gisle Johnsen, General Manager of Martec. “Our dealer follows up each project from sales to commissioning and on-site testing of the delivered systems and testing under the right whether conditions together with the crew.”

Super Light-Duty engines

The Serecraft S14 is 14.1 meters long and 4.2 meters wide and has two 6CXBM-GT Super Light Duty 509HP engines. The 6-cylinder engines have an output of 374 kW at 2700 rpm each and offer direct injection and heat exchanger cooling. Their design with 4 valves per cylinder and turbocharger/intercooler ensures a higher combustion efficiency. The CXB-series complies with IMO Tier II emissions regulations.
