The world of F1 powerboat racing has been set ablaze by a spectacular debut performance from Rusty Wyatt, the Canadian rookie who secured a historic victory at the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia. In a stunning turn of events, Wyatt not only claimed the number one spot on the podium but also etched his name in the UIM F1H2O Championship history books as the first Canadian rookie to achieve such a feat.

The race, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Indonesia’s Lake Toba, unfolded in a dramatic fashion, leaving fans and competitors alike in awe of Wyatt’s skill and tenacity. As Wyatt entered the final lap in third place, trailing behind seasoned competitors Jonas Andersson and Erik Stark, nobody could have predicted the unforeseen twist that would catapult him to victory.

Andersson’s boat faced a significant setback as it was slowed by a fire, while Stark, who briefly led the race, encountered technical issues that hindered his speed. Seizing the opportunity, Wyatt took an outside line to overtake both rivals and secure the win by a mere 0.973 seconds. The victory not only marked Wyatt’s debut win in the UIM F1H2O World Championship but also made him the first Canadian to win in the series and a rookie at that, propelling him into the championship lead.

“The race had a very technical track with nine turn pins, which was a lot to get used to being in a new boat with only a few hours of test time,” Wyatt said. “I got comfy and started to set some fast laps. We were right on pace right away, with top three to five. That was a huge first step of the weekend for the team and my confidence in the boat. Being with a new team is never easy, and I can’t explain how proud I am of all the guys who made the whole week go smoothly for our first race of the season. We qualified for P3 and got a great start to maintaining the position. The top three were battling the whole race; we got the lucky end of the top two to come around on the very last corner and pass both at the same time for our very first win in the F1H20 as a rookie.”

Reflecting on his historic win, Wyatt expressed his disbelief and joy, highlighting the race’s intensity and challenging conditions on Lake Toba. The moment was not only a personal triumph but also a source of pride for Canada. Stark, despite his disappointment with technical issues, acknowledged the fierce competition and the unpredictable nature of the race, emphasizing the high stakes and razor-thin margins that define the UIM F1H2O World Championship.

Wyatt’s debut win will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the defining moments of the season, setting the stage for an enthralling battle for supremacy in the races to come.

“Next race, we’re going to be going very strong,” Wyatt insisted. “We now know we have a setup to win. Vietnam will have quite a bit of a different course setup, so it should make for smoother racing and faster pace. I will train hard in the next few weeks and be as prepared as possible. I know the crew will put together a great Sharjah, Crystal Clear Heated Wiper Blades, and Naturaseal boat for me to contend for the top position.”

As we celebrate Wyatt’s remarkable achievement, it’s worth noting that this historic win occurred in the 300th race in the UIM F1H2O Championship’s 43-year history. The milestone adds an extra layer of significance to Wyatt’s victory.
