Boat Test #1584
By Capt. Bill Jennings
If you want a boat with the features of a pontoon, but prefer the performance of a V-bottom runabout, here it is. This all new SVX 191 outboard deck boat from Starcraft gives you the best of both worlds.
The interior layout resembles that of a typical pontoon. ‘L’ shaped and ‘U’ shaped settees provide exceptional seating capacity along with oodles of under seat storage. A huge in floor locker adds more. The helm itself closely resembles those found on pontoon boats, including basic instrumentation and an adjustable wheel. A full sized cooler fits into a dedicated slot in the helm. The captain is treated to a comfortable bucket seat with a ‘flip-lip’ seat riser, for improved docking visibility.
You can celebrate “happy hour” onboard, with the standard sink and dual cup holders that Starcraft calls an “Entertainment Center”. You won’t be cooking any family dinners here, but it is a welcome touch. The AM/FM Stereo with four speakers compliment the entertainment factor.
For convenient and dry escapes to island shorelines, stainless telescoping boarding ladders are mounted both bow and stern. The rear ladder is accessed from a large, full width aft swim platform. Catering to the serious fisherman, the SVX offers an optional fishing package with two fishing seats and a trolling motor plug.
Structurally, the hull is super strong, with a fully encapsulated integral stringer system. The bow rails are stainless steel, as is the frame for the standard Bimini top. Starcraft buyers are given a colour choice of black or white, for the rubber rub rails as well as a choice of interior and exterior trim colours.
Whether at speed or at rest, this boat looks and runs great. The 150 horsepower Yamaha sips fuel between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm, yet will push this SVX close to 50 mph at full throttle and trim.
If you are in the market for a practical runabout, here it is at an affordable price.
